My Musical Culture

Hi! My name is Imani Rain and I am a first-year student at Converse. I do not have very musical expertise but I played the viola for 3 years in middle school and at the moment, I play just a tiny bit of the piano. I am a child and family studies major and my hope is to be a school counselor in the future. I'm born and raised in South Carolina. My home is in Greenville, but I am currently living on campus as a resident. I am the youngest of my family with two brothers and one sister. My favorite way to pass time is sleeping, but I also enjoy listening to music, reading, cooking, and spending money. My number one favorite musical artist is The Neighbourhood. I've loved their music since I was younger and there is not a song by them that isn't absolutely amazing. I enjoy almost all genres of music except country. It just doesn't really resonate with me. Growing up, my family listened to all types of music including Christian Rock, R&B, Alternative, and much more and I think that's why my taste for music is so widespread.

According to my spotify's "On Repeat" playlist, the song that I have been listening to the most these days is "Watercolor Eyes" by Lana Del Rey. This song was featured in one of the most popular shows running at the moment called Euphoria. It's a beautiful song that really pulls at your heartstrings.

A song that means a lot to me and has resonated with for a long time is "Drew Barrymore" by SZA. The song is initially about being insecure and being so conscious of your flaws that you feel the need to apologize for them. It's a very a sad song but I resonate with it because I feel and think about a lot of the things she says in the song.

Pop music is not one of my favorite genres of music, but there are some pop songs that I can tolerate. This is not one of the, A song that I don't think I will ever enjoy listening to is "Levitating" by Dua Lipa. She is a beautiful artist with an amazing talent but I just find the song to be very annoying. It may be because the song is super overplayed, but I never find myself happy to hear it.

  1. All of these songs are so good! Though, I do try to steer myself away from Lana Del Rey (For what reason? I don't know.). I love SZA's voice so much. I'm not a big fan of her, but I do appreciate her voice (also, thank you for that song, I will be adding it to my playlist.). I'm tired of hearing Levitating by Dua Lipa, too. I liked her before she "blew up," but now all her songs are on TikTok and its just annoying.

  2. I think our music tastes are pretty similar. I actually heard this Lana Del Rey song the other day because I was watching Euphoria! While I’m not super into this song specifically, I do like a lot of Lana’s other songs. I don’t listen to SZA regularly but I do think some of her music can be enjoyable and I did like the one that you shared! I’m also really into The Neighbourhood. Since you enjoy their music you might also like Arctic Monkeys if you haven’t checked them out already! However, unlike you, I do like pop music. It’s not my number one favorite but I do listen to it pretty regularly just for fun and Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” did end up in my “On Repeat” at one point not too long ago.

  3. Imani, I really enjoyed listening to your music. Both of the artists you mentioned are two of my favorites. I've loved Lana Del Ray's music for awhile now, but never heard the song watercolor eyes. I'll definitely be adding it to my Spotify library! I also love SZA, and Drew Barrymore is one of my favorite songs. I have to agree with you that Levitating by Dua Lipa has gotten a little annoying. At first I didn't like it, then it started to grow on me, but eventually it was so overplayed that it got annoying.

  4. I really enjoyed your blog and learning about your music taste. When reading your blog I seen that pop music is not really your thing. For me I can't really connect to pop music, but one of my favorite pop artist is Arianna Grande. I also seen from reading your blog is that you love SZA. I also like SZA too. She is a great singer who makes great music. Her music is so timeless and my favorite song from SZA is "Broken Clocks". I really don't listen to Lana del Ray but I do feel that she is a good artist who has a pretty respected fanbase.

  5. When reading your blog, I noticed that you like SZA! Drew Barrymore is one of my favorite songs by her as I can relate to it too. I get what you're saying about pop music, especially Dua Lipa's "Levitating" it's so overplayed that I know every word to it even though I don't like it. Do you watch Euphoria? If so, one of the main artists for the music for the show is Labrinth and his music is AMAZING! One of my favorite songs by him is "Jealous" and it's super good, a great sad song to sing in the shower.

  6. Hello, Imani!

It completely slipped my mind that Watercolor Eyes is in Euphoria until you mentioned it so I went to give it a listen! It is a very ethereal song, and I’m a little sad that I don’t enjoy Lana Del Rey’s music as much anymore. I feel like she has such a distinct, beautiful style, but if you’re not absolutely in love with it, it’s easy to get burnt out on.
I love that you added Drew Barrymore!! It’s definitely one of my favorites from CTRL. I really love her delivery of the lyrics and it’s so cathartic to sing. She’s so good at communicating the really soft, vulnerable feelings and thoughts of navigating femininity. This song really gets me for holding oneself to a perfect standard and wanting so deeply to be the perfect picture for another person.
I also totally agree with you about Levitating! It’s just been so commercialized and the song’s been killed because of it. Levitating is still so catchy so I find myself going through cycles of loving it and hating it.

Thank you for all your music suggestions and getting me back into SZA this week!
